Balance | Senior Thesis
For my senior thesis I chose to design a solution for those with Bipolar Disorder. From initial research to final presentation, this project took over a year to produce but it allowed me to explore some of my favorite elements of design. I started this project with heavy research, leaning on surveys and interviews from both psychiatric professionals and people with the disorder to build my understanding of some of the problems those with Bipolar Disorder face. One problem, in particular, is how difficult it is to track and log the disorder. Through my interviews, I also discovered that people wanted an easy and inconspicuous way to track relevant information and be reminded of any scheduled events (like medication). This brought me to design a smartwatch as it is small, easy to conceal, always with the user, and simple to use. After refining the hardware design and prototyping several colorways, I moved into designing the UI and UX. This project was my first experience in UI and it gave me the opportunity to really stretch my skills. By the end of this project, I was able to design the watch as well as the full UI and UX experience.
It’s been several years since I designed this project, and smartwatches have come a long way. If I were to redo this project, I would update it to be more user-friendly and more aesthetically in line with today’s trends. I would also love to flesh out the phone app that connects to it so that I can learn more about the UI and UX processes behind phone apps.
Personal Projects
In my free time, I love to create little projects here and there, particularly if they involve wood and laser cutters. Though I would love to go back and take better photos of my projects, all of them have since been gifted. Until I am able to travel and see my family (and the projects I made) again, these will serve as placeholders.
